Students will learn techniques in representational and abstract ink usage, ranging from texturing to technical skill in realistic drawing. Depending upon each student's interests, they will be able to choose which techniques most interest them and to cultivate their artistic experience with ink and marker media. First, they will have the opportunity to experiment with several different types of pens, markers, and water-based inks. Then, the class will review reference books of drawings and photos to practice different types of shading, layering, and texturing with pens and ink. We will review how to utilize pointillism, cross-hatching, and soft shading methods to help create intrigue in ink work. Participants will learn how to combine these new skills to create work which blurs the line between the imaginary and the real. Students are encouraged to bring reference photos of subject matter which intrigues them, especially those with interesting patterns or shapes.
