Members' Juried Exhibit Report to the Advisory Board
August 26, 2015
The entries for the Exhibit this year were excellent. The Juror, Janet Kruskamp, was impressed with the level of art and commitment of the artists that we have here in the show and in the Villages.
Not having done a show of this kind, it took me some time to realize how it all worked. However, the “old guard”, on the Advisory Board rescued me several times. My thanks and gratitude to Barbara Gottesman, Marilyn Murata, Bill Tibbs and Joan Fury, Shanah Cole, Lynda Kelaita, Phyllis Bigelow and Susie Henderson. Without their encouragement, and generosity of time and talent it would not have happened.
Bill Tibbs and Lynda Kelaita arranged the Recognition Luncheon at the Club. The Room we had was private and nicely arranged with lovely views of the golf course. We had hoped to have had 25 reservations but were shy a couple. We also had three cancelations. It was decided not to take the award winning paintings to the luncheon as they were large and it was not possible to carry them to the club house. Not having the paintings at the luncheon seemed like an important link was missing to the overall purpose and reason for the luncheon. I read the comments of the juror that Susie Henderson had written down when she followed Janet as she was judging the pieces of Art. Having a visual to go with the comments would have enhanced my comments. Because of the timeline the day before the show with the judging, the day of the show transferring the paintings to various rooms in Cribari…..and the limitations on the times that are available that this can be done puts pressure on the available people that do it.
We had a discussion after I read the Juror's comments. Several people had wanted to know when they could view the paintings at Cribari..Center. None of us seemed to know the schedule for when the rooms were open. This led to further discussion from the floor. It was suggested that perhaps we could take turns sitting in the Conference room at various times so that the Art could be shown and( should be shown). We could do like they do in the Boutique and staff the artists showing work to a couple of hours one day a week . Kelley Julien had a good idea; instead of a luncheon we could perhaps have a cocktail party in the halls or courtyard of Cribari with everyone's painting on display before hanging them. It would be simpler and would motivate more artists to participate and be able to discuss their work with their colleagues.
Janet Kruskamp was paid the usual $100 honorarium. I needed to order more ribbons that I charged to my credit card. there are ribblons left over and are in the plastic box with the ribbons in them. I believe Bill Tibbs has the report on the luncheon reservations and costs. Marilyn Murata has the information on the fees for the entries. I will ask them to give these at the August 31 meeting. I will be out of town and unable to be at the meeting.
It was a pleasure to chair this event and learn how things “get done”. Thank you. ALICE SULLIVAN

JUROR'S COMMENTS 2015 MEMBERS JURIED SHOW
ACRYLIC/OIL category:
1. Barbara G. NOT PICASSO acrylic painting
NFS
Comments: Unusual...startling color....was not sure how to judge
it.
2. Lovina Smith MEXICAN CHAIR oil painting
(First Place)
Comment: Very nice piece. Felt the frame detracted somewhat from
the painting.
3. Ruth Lyer ALPINE VILLAGE oil
(second place)
Comment: liked neoprimative style and workmanship
4. Harriet Fernandez RABBI TEACHING IN HIS STUDY oil
Comment: Well done overall. Skin tones a little muddy in places.
Would like to have seen more in the foreground. (the table grain and some
edges). Wondered about the resource for portrait.
5. Alice sullivan FRANCESCA
(third place)
Comment: Thought it was sweet. The arm area tones were a little
muddy. The railing was too strong. It needed something to break it up.
MIXED MEDIA/COLLAGE category
1. Joan Fury THE WONDER OF IT ALL
Comments: Liked the rhythmic energy in the piece. Felt another
abstract shape rather than red dot would have worked better.
2. Phyllis Bigelow GOLDEN DREAMS
Comment: Very nice piece. Liked the use of script and the gold
paint (second place)
3. Marilyn Murata EARTH DANCE
Very interesting piece. Nice textures and choice of colors.
4. Jane Hink A PLACE TO SLEEP
Comments: High marks. Uniqueness and overall placement and
composition (First Place)
5. Bill Tibbs TANGERINE
Comments: nicely set
6. Michael Sunzeri CIDAC62
Comments: nicely framed. Overall pleasant feeling. Lacked center
of interest.
WATERCOLOR:
1. Kelley Julien MYSTIC MUSINGS
Comments: Like the spontaneity of the piece and the line drawing.
Felt it needed some contrast as it was all mid value.
2. Karen Honaker DESTINATION; ANDY'S CHERRY ORCHARD
(First Place)
Comments: Very professional. The composition arranged in such a
way that you were drawn through the picture. The use of color discriminating
and really popped near center of interest.
3. Marilyn Heyman PAINTING THE TOWN RED WHITE AND BLUE
(second place)
Comments: Impressed with the subtly of the application of paint and
the softness. Would like the drawing of the ellipses on can to be more
accurate.
4. Lynda Kelaita VENTURING ON SHALLOW WATERS
Comments: liked the freshness and spontaneity of the piece and the
use of color. Felt another frame would be better to showcase the piece.
5. Anne Plonka CALIFORNIA DREAMING
Comment: Airy feeling. Bright well balanced color and application
of the paint.
