MATERIALS LIST AND CURRICULUM

The total cost of the 6-week class will be $312.00, which includes the pastel set for the first project.  Normally, I charge $135 for that as a stand-alone workshop (Intro to Pastel Portrait workshop) and I am throwing in the cost of the sanded paper for free!

Here's the Materials List Letter you can send:

We will be doing 2 projects in our 6-week class, with the purpose of exploring different papers/textures and techniques for special effects.  For the first project, we will use Canson Mi-Tientes sanded pastel paper and a portrait reference image, which I will provide. There are 12 required pastels for this project, costing $12.  For the second project, the student will need to bring her own paper and may use her own reference (please see instructions below), or a reference that I will provide.

As we all know, it is easy to spend a fortune on endless supplies (aside from the cost of pastels!) when working with this medium. Part of the objective of this class is to show how to be resourceful without loading up on costly tools. With that in mind, below is a list of materials I recommend:

1     Set of SOFT pastels (the more variety of colors, the better), especially dark colors (I will have a large set of soft Rembrandt pastels from which you may borrow).

2      large, kneaded eraser

3     #2 pencil for drawing your reference on the paper.

4     18"-36" ruler for gridding the paper (I will bring a couple)

5     "Gloves in a Bottle" (or similar) to use as a barrier for your skin, and easier clean-up.

6     Baby wipes to clean your hands

7     Roll of paper towels

8     Plastic container with lid (like Rubbermaid or Glad) in which to separate and store your palette of pastels(colors) once you begin your piece.

9     Hand mirror to view your work from reverse (I will bring 6)

10     Masking tape or blue painters' tape

11     Hard surface Drawing board of at least 23" x 31" (Available at University Art)

12     2 sheets of Glassine paper to cover and protect your projects during transportation and in between classes

13     OPTIONAL: Vinyl/latex gloves, or finger cots IF you wish to paint with them on.

14     OPTIONAL: Dust reducing face mask, if you wish to wear one while painting.

*Instructions for a good reference for project #2:

-Look for high contrast color images

-Not too busy; the subject should be a large part of the photo (i.e. flower, simple still life, landscape, etc.)

-We will be gridding these, so keep it simple

Bring as many images as you want to the first 2 classes and I will review each one.  If I reject your image, chances are it is because there is not enough contrast.
