Collage Workshop with Kay Duffy
Saturday, April 23, 2016
Kay Duffy's Collage Workshop Saturday, April 23
A FUN WORKSHOP! Kay will show you how create beautiful textures with watercolor pigments on special oriental papers. These lovely papers are very absorbent and often imbedded with fibers or patterns. Once colored and torn, portions of these interesting papers, as well as metallic papers, dried leaves and other flat objects, will be collaged (glued) into shapes and patterns to create abstract or impressionistic paintings. Emphasis will be placed on shapes, colors and textures in abstract arrangements. However, impressionistic portrayals of real images, especially flowers and landscapes, work very well with this method. Unique greeting cards can also be created with the scraps.
There will be instruction, demonstration and personal assistance with your project throughout each day, and a critique at the end of the session.
TIME + DATE: Saturday, April 23, 2016; 10 am-3:30 pm; in the Cribari Center Art Room.
FEE: $45 for members, $50 for non-members. Limited to 8 students. A check is your reservation. Contact Barb Gottesman barb.gottesman@gmail.com or 408-531-9402l
purchase. I will provide watercolor pigments, glue (acrylic matte medium) and brushes - everything you need to have fun!
WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING:
Paper or canvas to glue things on - at least 1/2 sheet in size. Bigger is better. The paper should be sturdy watercolor paper like
Arches (any surface). Or use an old, failed painting which you have painted over with gesso. Aquarius paper is a good choice
because it does not buckle and is inexpensive, or you can try Strathmore illustration board, which is more expensive.
I have a supply these papers which you can purchase in class. Also bring a board and clips to hold your work.
"Stuff" - for your collage - personal memorabilia (copy your old photos, etc. on your computer),
theme ideas such as words, Poetry, magazine clippings which are of special interest to you. Or your own small sketches.
I like things which to glue down things fairly flat - metallic papers (from the Xmas trash); fabrics, fibers, notions, leaves,
feathers, interesting papers; old, failed paintings with interesting colors and textures, which can be torn up and glued down.
I will have a supply of “stuff” and colored papers for you to use.
Watercolor, ink, acrylic paints, white paint or pastel - I have a supply of these pigments for your use. These will be used to enhance
and adjust the collage surface. Using quality paints insures that the paintings you create are color-fast.
CHOSE A THEME OR SUBJECT - OR YOU CAN CHOOSE TO BE TOTALLY ABSTRACT.
· BRING LUNCH PICNIC ITEM TO SHARE. Then we can to talk art!
· SOURCES OF SUPPLIES: The papers I chose are translucent, absorbent and inexpensive.
MulberryPapers.com and Hollanders Papers.com - lots of interesting papers.
The on-line catalogue is full of good information + fun to browse.
Locally you have a few of these papers at University Art. I recommend colorless papers - colored tissue paper fades notoriously.
